MIMN in action – some recent examples of MIMN at work

Keeping the wheels of life turning in Ghana
MIMN is to give £5212 to the Re-Cycle organisation for its vital work in Koforidu, Eastern Ghana – a micro enterprise run by seven physically disabled individuals. This team imports ‘disused’ bikes, refurbishes them and sells them at affordable cost to the local community. This will enable Re-Cycle to provide 400 bikes to cash-strapped people in Ghana, allowing them to generate income, reach school, work or local markets and become more self-supporting. Around 2400 people in Ghana will benefit from this initiative. But there are wider advantages too. Re-Cycle offers bike repairs, so the bikes last longer. And, by taking good quality bikes from UK landfill sites and providing the enterprise owners with much-needed income, it’s sustainable in just about every respect.

ICCA supporting food gardens for South African orphans through MIMN
The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) is partnering MIMN to fund a sustainable vegetable garden for HIV orphans in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa – an initiative focusing on skills transfer and sustainable development. Working alongside international NGO Starfish Greathearts Foundation, the project will cost only £2000, but will provide the equivalent of 10,980 meals, as well as training local people in essential skills.

MIMN tunes into blind people’s needs
MIMN recently helped six blind people to substantially improve their quality of life by giving them specially adapted items of audio equipment. Six ‘Concerto 2’ FM/DAB radios with tape, CD, SD card and USB facilities were provided at a cost of £1000, via the British Wireless for the Blind Fund.

BDRC Continental donates over £15,000 to MIMN
Venue market research specialists BDRC Continental donated £15,293 to MIMN during 2013, making the company the single most generous contributor to the charity after Meetings and Incentive Travel magazine/meetpie.com.

The Oysters & MIMN – Supporting the industry charity

Like many in the meetings and events industry, the Oysters recognise how fortunate most of us are. We are lucky to work with fantastic people, visit wonderful places and enjoy a decent standard of living.

But we’re aware that others are not so fortunate. And that we have a social responsibility to try and do something to help whenever we can.

Which is why the Oysters are delighted to pledge their continuing support for the Meeting Industry Meeting Needs (MIMN) charity.

What is MIMN?
Meetings Industry Meeting Needs (MIMN) is a registered charity founded by leading figures in the UK Conference and Events industry, dedicated to raising funds for worthy causes relevant to the industry.

What does MIMN do?
It raises funds for deserving causes connected to our industry. Many needy causes have minimal access to public or alternative funding. MIMN provides much-needed financial assistance to these organisations through fund-raising activities. Please go to
www.meetingneeds.org.uk to learn more about MIMN and its initiatives.

How can you help MIMN?
In two simple ways. You can become a Meeting Needs Champion. Just go to
https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/meetingsindustrymeetingneeds and set up a direct debit mandate to give a monthly donation using the ‘Donate now’ button.
Or you can become a Corporate Charity Partner. Go to

Oyster's celebrate Summer Party success

Around 370 corporate, agency and association event planners and NTOs came together for the recent annual Oyster Summer Party organised by Beyond Certainty at Kensington Roof Gardens.

Attendees, who included HSBC, Goldman Sachs, FT, Black Tomato, CL events and  Banks Sadler enjoyed a variety of entertainment, food and activities linked to the 24 Oyster destinations who  participated in the event, which has been heralded a great success.

Activities took place in a variety of themed areas and included a truffle making demonstration from Flanders and a cow stacking game to win a trip for two to Switzerland. While entertainment included Can Can dancers from France, The Human Beat Box on the main stage and a Kylie impersonator with Britain's Got Talent act Stavros Flatley courtesy of Cyprus rounding off the lively evening.

"We were thrilled with the response to the evening and to be able to meet with so many new and familiar faces." comments Oysters representative Sarah Mathews, from The Belgium Convention Bureau - Flanders Brussels.

"The Oyster's Summer Party really represents an opportunity for buyers to meet a number of international destinations in a fun and vibrant party atmosphere and it's great that so many could join us during a busy events week for the industry."

An informal survey on the evening was also conducted to find out whether buyers were holding the same, more or less overseas events.  Guests were encouraged to put a pearl into jars labelled with up, down and the same.  'Up' seemed to receive the most number of votes with a jar full to the brim, whereas the jar labelled 'same' received the next number of votes. 'Down' received the least number of votes with the jar half empty.

Sarah adds; "It was encouraging to see that a large number of buyers were looking to hold more overseas events. We see The Oysters and our events as a real opportunity to change perceptions and showcase the potential of our destinations and I look forward to the next Oyster party in 2011."
